There are bike racing events that do break competition down into 5 year age

increments too. You will see 5 year age increments at, for example, the

State Masters Track Championships. Most races are not able to do that

because of the constraints of available road time, officials budgets, etc.

Race organizers generally attempt to select field criteria based on their

personal interests and on what they think will draw the largest amount of

people and attention to their events. Age is only a relative predictor of

performance and ability. Often Masters fields have a wide disparity of

abilities.
