Call to Arms for all Crusaders: The Grail

Duncan Calver

2005-01-06

Definitely joking...always just curious when there's mythical references to

Canadians...got the scoop from D Grab, just doing my part representing

clueless yet inquisitive roadies...

I can't tell if you're joking or not. I'll choose yes, you are joking.

It's all in good fun. Not to be taken seriously...unless the reader took

the grail, in which case it should be taken very seriously.

What exactly are you talking about? Flap-heads? Squinty-eyed power? A

blessed civilization? Dogs of war loosened? Gentle plains and pastures

of

British Columbia?

As a Canadian citizen from BC/legal USA resident I find your

manifesto

confusing and rife with excessive hyperbole, not to mention that it

contains

a hint of nationalist paranoia! Has this anything to do with bicycle

racing?

Maybe I missed something having to do with cyclo-cross (I'm a roadie)?

Please inform me, because although I was thoroughly perplexed by this, D

Grab, I have an inquiring mind and would like to know what you're

getting

 at...

It is the Knights of the Cross Crusades and quite possibly America's

determination to actively oppose the threats of our time as formed and

fixed on December 21 2004. On that day we saw the base ignorance and

foolish cruelty of these flap-headed terrorists, and we glimpsed the

future

they intend for us. They intend to strike fear and chaos into our

peaceful

and noble lives to the limits of their squinty-eyed power.

As honorable citizens of a blessed civilization we feel it is right and

proper to extend to these heathens an opportunity to turn away from

this

barbaric madness. Every potential adversary now knows that terrorism

carries serious consequences, and that the wise course is to abandon

those

pursuits before the dogs of war are loosened upon the gentle plains and

pastures of British Columbia.

With our intrinsic strength and sacred resolve we shall face and

overcome

this threat to all that we cherish. We declare an unrelenting war

against

these crass, ignoble and square-wheeled infidels. We refuse to live in

fear. Failing their heeding of this final call for civilized conduct an

active campaign of vengeance shall be unleashed. Skies will turn

crimson

with the glow of their burning villages and the night air filled with

the

lamentations of grief and sorrow. Honor must be regained and

retribution

delivered unto these fools. We march forth proudly with shields held

high

and spears bright and all bathed in the golden light of righteousness.

your humble herald-of-tidings,

D.F. Grabowski, Esq.

It bears mentioning that the grail has migrated down to the Bay Area.

The real danger is that the grail might head out east. I hear that the

NE 'cross guys are itching to parade it around.

Yep Duncan....you missed it alright. First of all, you obviously missed

the extreme scarcasm and humorous tenor of said message.

The Grail Della Grunge is a cyclocross trophy that is suppose to stay in

the city that wins it (ie- Portland or Seattle). The trophy has

legitimately changed hands several times in the past few years as each

city has picked up wins in the Grail challenge races. This past season,

Portland won the Grail back from Seattle in a convincing fashion. Then,

it was stolen by Geoff Kabush (a very good 'cross/MTB racer, who happens

to be Canadian). No big deal, right? Well, we want it back. It's a

symbol of pride and cyclocross superiority. Kabush and friends have

taken the Grail and laid down challenges in many on-line forums. It's

all in good fun of course, but we still want the Grail back stateside-

in PDX where it rightfully belongs.

So Duncan, don't take these things (or yourself) so seriously. Maybe

you need to pick up a 'cross bike next year and join in on the fun.

Roadies are allowed to race cyclocross too :-)

Cheers,

Brian Witty
