6:08 p.m. - Bicyclist struck by hit and run driver

Press Release from: Washington County Sheriff's Office

Shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Friday December 31, 2004 deputies were

dispatched to a report of a crash involving a motorist and a bicyclist

on SW Susbauer Road

The investigation shows that a 43-year-old Hillsboro man was bicycling

northbound on SW Susbauer Road just south of SW Wren Road, when a

motorist in a pick-up truck struck him. The bicyclist says that the

right front bumper of the pick-up truck hit his bicycle's rear tire. He

says he was catapulted in the air and may have hit the hood of the

pick-up truck before landing in a ditch.

The victim bicyclist also says that the driver of the pick-up truck

slowed down after hitting him and that the driver looked in his/her rear

view mirror and then left the scene.

The victim was transported by Life Flight Air Ambulance to Legacy

Emanuel Hospital. He was released on Saturday January 1, 2005. The

victim's family says that his doctor told them that he was lucky to be

alive.

The bicyclist describes the vehicle as a 1997 to 2003 black or dark blue

Ford 150 pick-up truck. He says it has regular-sized cab and flare sides

and may have front-end damage. There is no suspect description. It was

dark and the bicyclist was unable to tell if the driver was male or

female.
