Hey OBRAlanders!
As a departure from the recent OBRA garage sale of wonder I wanted to let
everyone know about the new bike/multi use path that
connects the Sylvan Hill area to Cedar Hills/217. Some of you may already
know about this and as a bicycle commuter working
in Beaverton this provides most of the 'missing link' between the west slope
of the West hills and the Beaverton area.
As I would rather not climb the Cornell/Thompson route every day of the week
I was always looking for a way to ride from the Zoo
to Beaverton but there is a large 'no mans land' between Barnes Rd and Rt 26
that has no roads. (at least that I know of that don't involve
a rather large climb) So I was driving along Rt 26 one day and to my
surprise I saw a guy on a bike riding on a trail of some kind directly
parallel to the Eastbound lane of 26! I was pretty excited that there might
actually be that secret route I had been looking for! So one Saturday I went
out and did
a little Christopher Columbus mission save the plundering and slavery.
For the most part there is no way around riding up to the Zoo via Washington
park and the hills that are involved. On a 42x19 pannier laden
fixed gear this involved lots of standing up. One can always take the MAX
from Goose Hollow one stop to the zoo then take the elevator up.
But this is better than risking certain death riding the 'Bike Route' along
westbound 26 between the PGE Park onramp and the Zoo. By the
way. have any of you ever ridden on 26?....and lived to tell about it?
Anyway...once you get to the Zoo you ride down the hill to where you get on
26 but you make the first right and there is a 'service road' that takes you
right
up to just before the Sylvan Hill exit. You will come to a 4 way stop and
notice on your left a nice new concrete path that goes up the end of the
Sylvan exit ramp.
Once at the top you cross the intersection and get on another section of
path that runs right along the side of 26 and runs up the hill to the
cemetery. Once you get to the top
you make a left and go over the highway then make a quick right on to a
residential street. At the bottom of this street you will see the concrete
path start again on the right.
You are now riding westbound behind the eastbound soundwall and before you
know it you will come out from behind the wall and have the eastbound 26
traffic no more
than 6 feet off your starboard side. Don't worry..a car would have to get
air come up and take you out.
This trail continues down until it empties into a residential area right by
the entrance to 217 and the Big Lots store. From there you can easily access
the Sunset Transit center
area or take Buttner road to Murray.
I am pretty excited as now I can pretty much ride all the way to Beaverton
and not have to do the slog over the Cornell/Thompson hump every day. You
just gotta love this city and
all the bike friendly planning!
By the way..is everyone enjoying all the gravel over the roads? Woo hoo! :)
Cheers!
Keith
