S-Works E5 opinions?

This is true; GS Camerati is riding these bikes.

In a word they're grand. As a team we fully enjoyed racing these frames.

Obviously we're a bit biased as they are a sponsor but the frames ride

really nice. It may not have the high zoot reputation of an Italian rig

or even its Tarmac older brother but these are nonetheless definitely

built for racing. We rode the hilly road races and the technical crits

and have been super impressed with its ability to handle out of the

saddle climbing and tight high speed cornering.

We all rode the silver anodized model and I must say that finish was

really durable and stood up very well to all of our traveling.

All in all we've been very happy on the bikes and very much look forward

to another season on them.

Starting to look at upgrading my frame, and the S-Works E5 (56) is on

my

list of possible bikes. Anyone ridden these? Currently ride an Allez,

all aluminum, alu fork, so I'm no stranger to road vibration: it

doesn't

 really booottthhhheeeerrrr mmmmeeeeee!

There sure are lots of them for sale..

Thanks,

Marty

The Collins Cycle team out of Eugene has been on them since 2003. I

personally really like mine and it is the first and only compact style

road bike I've owned. It is my 4th Specialized road bike. I have it set

up w/ an Easton carbon post. Plenty stiff and very light. I like the

clamping mechanism, which allows you to put a round tube into a bladed

tube.

My only comment pertains to water getting into the frame very easy via

the seat tube on rainy rides w/o fenders. I know that we all discovered

this very quickly during the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic SR that year when

it was rainy. If you were to tip your bike back, water would come

running out of the rear drops and top of seat tube. Quite a bit

actually, like at least 1/2 - 3/4 cup. I think all that weight is the

reason I didn't win. ;)

The remedy was to stretch a section of inner tube around the area prior

to sliding the seat post in. Making a little boot gasket to cover it all

seemed to make it all better. Didn't look that sharp but not bad.

Anyone else out there have comments?

I've been riding one for about a year. I guess I don't have much to say

except that it's a solid bike, is very stiff, tracks well, and is

somewhat inexpensive.

The nice thing about the E5 is that it is certainly good enough to race

on but costs less than a lot of other comparable frames (and it comes

with a fork, headset, and seatpost as well). For myself, I prefer to

have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that if I trashed the

frame in a crash, I would not be out $1,000-2,000. I used to ride a

Litespeed and the specter of its destruction worried the hell out of me

since it cost about $1,600. Moreover, I actually prefer the

Specialized's ride quality over the litespeed, and it was much less

expensive.

On the bad side, I think the seatpost clamp design is poor, and tends to

allow large amounts of water into the tubing. This can be solved by

covering the seatpost clamp with some kind of stretchy, rubber-like

grommet, but this makes it more difficult to adjust the seatpost. Also,

my friend bought an E5 that, when new, was badly out of alignment and

had to be sent back (they did give him a new one). I don't know how

common this is.

Hope this helps,

Derek
