Opinions on Mavic 'Cross Wheels

I've been riding on Mavic Ksyrium SL's for the past two seasons. I

really like them as they're fairly light and very durable. I currently

own two pair. I used Open Pro's before that w/ great success. One plus

for me w/ the Ksyriums was ease of repair after my rear derailler died

at Barton last fall (it got pulled into my spokes, damaging 3 in the

process). They were pretty gouged up and bent, but not broken. The

design allows you to replace the spoke very easily w/o removing the

tire. Quite simple. I trued the wheel on the bike and the whole thing

took about 15 minutes to fix.

A negative is that the rear freehub body, in my personal experience (and

also my roommate's), tends to get mucked up inside fairly quickly,

creating some friction that prevents the freewheel from functioning

correctly. As you roll the bike forward, the pedals sometimes want to

rotate too, rather than stay in place. For cyclocross remounts, this can

be a little frustrating as you want the pedals to be in the same place

everytime so you don't have to look at your feet. A minor inconvenience

that I've gotten used to, but am not thrilled about. I clean and rebuild

the pawl internals frequently and there's a chance that I'm using the

wrong lubrication inside.

I think the Kona boys have been on these wheels too for the past 3-4

years. That says something.

Hi Chris and OBRA community,

I recently asked a similar question, and 6 out of 7 responders recommended Mavic Open Pro rims laced to Ultegra hubs. Supergo.com has that wheelset right now for $190 (the website says "out of stock" but I called and they do have them now).

Thanks to everyone who responded.
