Starting the new season

There are a lot of rules we could hash over. I would like to remind

all of us about a few rules that keep us safe. Please chime in if you

would like to add more.

I'm not sure if this is a "rule," but it IS certainly a good code of

conduct:

====

Try not to let anger enter into how we ride...it's a difficult enough

sport without having to predict an angry rider's maneuvers. It's a

"sport," and participants should be "good sports!"

1) stay to the right if the support/follow car passes you. Even though

you may still be in the race, you no longer have the safety of the lead

and follow cars.

2) never pass the lead/support/follow car on the left. Too

dangerous...could be oncoming traffic!

3) obey the yellow line rule. It is true you can be forced onto or over

the yellow line occasionally. Get back quickly for your own safety! You

may want to find a safer spot so it wont happen again. Never go over the

yellow line to advance position! This is a blatant disregard of the

rule! Use peer pressure to deal with the few that think this is O.k. Get

their number and report it.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Starting the new season

As we are only 2 weeks away from our first events of the year I thought

that maybe it was timeto go over a few rules. As so often happens at the

first events, we get very new people to our sport and it seems that

instructions at the start of the race sometimes do not get through. If

any of you old timers (excuse me, more experienced racers) would like to

chirp in here it would be appreciated.

At every event you will need to fill out a Standard Release and

Register. You can download the form from the website and have it ready

if you did not want to wait in line. If you have not already joined

OBRA you will be getting 2 cloth numbers that will be yours for the rest

of the year. In road races you should place one number in the middle of

your back down on the pockets. This is for the follow car officials to

be able to identify you. The other number needs to be one the side,

facing the side of the road where the finish line camera will be

located. Picture yourself down in the drops sprinting for the line.

Then picture your number in that position so that the road side can see

if. Please remember that if we can't see your number, we will not place

you.

Which brings up a whole new subject. Because many of the packs will

have 40+ riders, and we do not have a chip system. The judges are

expected to pick the top 15 riders. Many times they can get more, but

many times when there are multiple finishes 15 is all that occurs. Look

around and figure our where you think you might have been. If you think

that you might have been in the top 15 then after a cool down, circle

back to the finish area and verify your place with the officials.

Please do not expect changes to the finish 5 days after the event when

you get around to reading the results. (sigh).

Each field will start off with a follow car in front. An official

directly behind the pack and one or more wheel cars. If you have spare

wheels make sure that you label them and give them to the wheel car

before the race. Please do not expect that should you have a flat that

your wheel will only go to you. We have a small system to sort out

wheels, but it is not perfect. Don't put your good wheels in the follow

car. While riding in the pack please observe the yellow line rule.

This is the line that divides the road for oncoming traffic. You should

consider this the end of the world. You are not allowed to ride on or

over the yellow line. This is subject to disqualification and immediate

removal from the race. If you need to work yourself to the front of the

group you must do so without going over this line.

At the finish you need to keep both hands on the bars. Yes I know you

might be excited that you won, but you still need to keep your hands on

the bars.

Okay, that is my immediate input, what about the rest of you?

Be mellow. Remember, its just a bike race (unless of course you are

While we are all out there to place well, and maybe win, most of us

would like to have a pleasant experience in the process.

Be mellow. Remember, its just a bike race. Have fun and enjoy the

company of your fellow racers. You might even make some friends

along the way.

Sorry, that's not really a rule, but it seems like people on occasion

forget that, in addition to finishing well, most of us are out racing

to have a good time.
