FYI: TDF finish line timing

You could read a slightly more technical description of the systems at:

Transponders http://www.amb-it.com/

Camera http://www.finishlynx.com/

OBRA currently has a 35mm slit lens photofinish camera (uses film as opposed

to video). Unfortunately the operation of this camera is so cumbersome that

it is rarely used. We will be using it next weekend at the Alpenrose

Challenge so if you are interested come on out. You should come out to the

Challenge anyhow because it will be world class tack racing and you don't

get to see that all that often. I am trying to convince everybody that OBRA

needs to get a FinishLynx or other line scanner video finish line system but

the $12,000 cost, last time I checked, is putting people off a bit.

The transponders are another issue that has been discussed here before.

Thee is a company that will rent and operate that system here but the cost

is higher than most people are willing to pay. I am watching the

development and costs of commercials systems and another member is working

on a custom built system using off the shelf RFID chips. It may be a while

before we start seeing these used frequently at local events.

I was curious about the the yellow transponders on the left chainstays of

all the Tour riders bikes. I found a good description of the system, and the

finish line cameras at:
