I agree about the cash prizes posted, but how are we
suppose to list prizes when 9 out of 10 sponsors don't
send prizes until right before an event and you need
to get your flyers printed by Feb for events like the
Seattle Bike Show and since printing is cheaper in
bulk you just do all your printing then.
Thanks

I have to point out that the OBRA rules state:
"6. - ENTRY FORMS/RACE ANNOUNCEMENTS
6.1 - The race organizer must include the following
information on the race
Entry forms/Race announcement:
Name of Event
Date(s) of Event
Location of Event
Map or Directions to Race Course
Course description
Type of Race
Contact information for race organizer
Categories, start times, entry fees and prizes
Any entry restrictions
6.2 - Entry forms/Race announcements must be
approved by the OBRA Executive
Director prior to publication."
This means that you should be able to see the prize
list at least when you
fill out the entry form. Unfortunately the label
"Entry forms/Race
announcement" is inadequately specific and there are
often inconsistencies
in the various places that race announcements are
posted. I am going to
propose the following rule change for 2006:
Change 6.2 to:
"6.2 Entry forms/Race announcements must be approved
by the OBRA Executive
Director prior to publication. The Entry forms/Race
announcements will, at a
minimum, be published on the OBRA web page
(www.obra.org) or in a location
that can be linked from that site and also
distributed to the OBRA listserv.
This should occur at least 30 days before the event.
Any conflicts between
different publications of the Entry forms/Race
announcement will be resolved
based on the information posted to the web site.
Any changes to the
information on the Entry forms/Race announcements
must be approved by the
OBRA Executive Director or Chief Referee. Unless
there are extenuating
circumstances information regarding categories,
start times, entry fees,
prizes or entry restrictions will not be changed
except to add categories or
increase prizes. Statements that allow for changes
in categories, start
times, entry fees, prizes and/or entry restrictions
will not be permitted."
I think this will be more specific and help resolve
conflicts.
I agree with Molly that there needs to be more
advertising not only for
mountain bike races but for other events. This
advertising should be
oriented not only to existing racers but also to
potential new racers and to
the general public.

Subject: *****SPAM***** RE: [OBRA Chat] $ for MTB
series in 2006?
Hold on a second, I thought this thread was about
the $ in mountain bike
racing!
Back to the point:
I'm with Kori. I don't race FOR the money but, I'd
like to see race
payouts posted right along with the race entry fees.
Racing is damn
expensive and I'd like to know when I could possibly
win $ for some race
and nothing for another.
I wrote something about race payout on my journal
last summer.
http://www.mollycameron.com/2005/09/12-hours-of-wilamette-pass.html
I'm pushing for consistent payout for the men and
women's ELITE category
races. Especially in mountain bike racing. I want to
see mountain bike
race participation grow. I feel that if we have more
elite riders
participating in XC racing that will influence more
beginners and thier
friends to get out and try it.
When you pre-register for a race if you see the
potential payout right
there alongside the entry fees, it will certainly
get you a little more
excited to show up and start an event. Also, a
pre-posted payout
schedule will let racers that need to leave early
for work or church or
whatever know that they will be getting a check in
the mail for that
strong 4th place finish.
Keep doing the prize raffles. They are fun and kinda
bring everyone
together after the race.
What about more mountain bike series advertising?
(and clarity) For
instance, I still don't know what the "high school
series" is. Lets stop
writing race flyers in terms that only seasoned
racers will understand.
I want to see EXCESSIVE driving directions, and lots
and lots of simple
plain english race instructions. City and area
reference points too. I
often spend 20 minutes on the computer looking for
race locations cause
I cannot figure it out from the website/flyers.
My 2 cents. If we make XC racing attractive for
elite level racers and
simple and accessible for beginners, more will
participate.

In an attempt to decide which races to focus on
(since I would really
like to do all of them but know that's not a
sustainable approach) I'm
wondering what kinds of MTB series are out there
this year, and which
one offers the best prize money. Yep, I'm not
looking for any more
trophies on my mantel, just going straight for
the mercenary incentive.
Of course I'll also be weighing the amount of
single track in
proportion to the distance to drive (and
conflicting road races), but
the dollars will be a very influential factor.
Mike? Randy? Petr?
What are you serving up this year?
Looking forward to it.
