Marco Serpellini 35

Marco Serpellini 33

Are these the famous Marco Serpellini twins who were born two year's

apart?

I would prefer a 40+ because at age 54, I find it more difficult to race

against people 20 years my junior, but I do not want to race in a 4/5

field. I suppose it may be a self centered position, but probably no

more so than the same reasons that those 35 years old want to race

masters. After all, those who are under 40, could choose to down grade

if they feel they cannot compete in their current category against the

younger guys, but I suppose they do not want to do that any more than I

want to race in a 4/5 field.

As for the numbers, I have found the 40+ plus fields are fairly large

without the need to go to younger ages, as OBRA keeps aging. The CAT

1/2 fields often are smaller. Of course, the CAT 3 fields tend to be

huge, as most of us at any age are average and tend to rise to CAT 3 and

get no better.

There is no right answer to this and someone is always going to be

disappointed.

Why 35+

Retiring this year

Lance Armstrong 34

Mario Chipollini 38

Francesco Casagrande 35

Pavel Tonkov 36

Angel Casero 33

Rolf Aldag 37

Uwe Peschel 37

Igor Gonzalez de Galeano 32

Niki Aebersold 33

Ludo Dierckxsen 41

Tristan Hoffman 35

Marco Serpellini 35

Marco Serpellini 33

Bart Voskamp 37

Javier Pascual LLorente 34

Peter Farazijn 36

Average Age 35.4

Take out the highest and lowest and it's still 35.2

That seems to be the age when most start so slow, even the pros.

It's too late for 06 but for 07

35+ A and B

A: cat 2/3

B: cat 4/5 and 3's over 45(unless you win too much then you're boot up)

Besides the largest number of "traditional" masters (35+) is between 35

and 39. Numbers drop in each 5 year span above that.

Why? Maybe the Cascade Classic should fall in line and raise the age

to

40+. It seems to me that if you are under 40, you are a bit young to

claim

to be a masters racer and should be able to race with your category.

In

many other sports 40 is the cut off.

I think that since Mt. Hood Cycling Classic is now an NRC race with a

$27,000!!! purse that the race should fall in alignment with the Cascade

Classic and offer a 35+ Masters race instead of 40+.

Full Sail Brewing

Presents

2006 Mt. Hood Cycling Classic

May 31st to June 4th

I wanted to take the time to again thank everyone that attended

last year's event and helped to make it so successful. We appreciate

your participation. We are now in full swing preparing for 2006. The web

site has been updated (at least 90% updated) and registration is now

open. You can find us at www.mthoodcyclingclassic.com

<http://www.mthoodcyclingclassic.com/> We have some huge changes for

2006 that we are excited about. It is our hope that these changes will

continue to improve this event and make for better quality racing for

you the competitor.

Here are just a few of the things to look forward to.

* We moved up in our NRC ranking and are now an A level

event with a 2.4 NRC value.

* Overall prize list is now nearly $27,000!!!

* Pro/Elite men and women have an extra stage to race

making it a 5 day 6 stage race (check out the new fairly flat stage 2)

* In an attempt to better assist with travel schedules,

masters 40+, and CAT 3 men will no longer have to race the prologue. You

will start on Friday!

* Registration/packet pickup has been revamped and will

run 10 times faster guaranteed!

* New this year every registered rider will receive a pass

into the post race BBQ celebration.

The community of Hood River and our wonderful sponsors are all

very excited to host this event again. I continue to receive tremendous

feedback throughout Hood River as to the fun and excitement it is to

have racing at this level in their community.

Please keep in mind that categories will fill up so make sure

and register early if you plan to attend. Last year the CAT 3 men filled

up 5 weeks out and the Pro 1-2 Men filled 3 weeks out. We are

anticipating another good turn out so do not wait until the last second

to register. Also please book your lodging accommodations early. Cooper

Spur has rooms available now but will not for long as does Hood River

Inn. Both of these businesses have been tremendous supporters and have

great accommodations. Be sure and tell them you are participating in the

event as they have rooms specifically blocked for the race. Otherwise

you will probably be told they are full. There info is on or web site

under lodging.

Finally a little prize contest. To whomever the lucky persons

are that register online 1st, 50th or 100th place will win a Mt. Hood

Cycling Classic messenger bag made by Dakine. Way cool bag especially

for heading to the office or classes for three lucky winners!

Thanks everyone and we look forward to seeing you on the

starting line!

Sincerely,

Chad Sperry
