Evan Plews
Thanks for all the Saturday/Sunday racing input.
Obviously I didn't intend to start a religious debate or even a debate
about which day is superior.
There are a number of reasons to support racing on both days and we have
seen most of them on this thread.
As a former promoter myself, I can think of a number of advantages
either way. If it is all about numbers then Sunday is probably better.
If we want an inclusive organization then supporting both days is
probably a better option.
I suppose my point is that I personally know and ride with a number of
people who have raced in the past and don't race now due to the Sunday
conflict and as well as those who would not consider racing because of
potential conflicts.
I would even expect that Sunday is in fact a "better" day for most
people in this area. However, I think we have exposed a problem that
should be addressed--there needs to be more Saturday races to better
accomodate all schedules and lifestyles.
As far as money for racing, dream on. I have been racing for many years
and I still feel blessed when I come home with prize money. However,
those who attended the Pringle Creek 'Cross race or the Klamath MTB
races in the 1990s will remember that we had 100% payout for the
Pro/Open categories.
Other promoters should use this approach for several reasons:
1. Protects you in case of low turn outs.
2. Gives an incentive for attendence and upgrades.
3. Eliminates any confusion as to expectations from the racers.
Another suggestion: NEVER AWARD PRIZE MONEY LESS THAN YOUR ENTRY FEE!
It isn't an award if you are not willing to give more than you receive.
Cheers!

From a purely racing and promoting standpoint (no spiritual stuff)
Sundays are superior for holding races! Here's why:
*work hard all wk and come home beat friday eve (like most of us
do)...no worries, sleep in, do an easy ride, and pack...you'll be ready
to race Sunday morning
*when I put on my MTB race, Sat was a full day of course marking,
reminding volunteers, pre-registration, getting organized...
These two scenarios from both perspectives make SUnday preferable...
Call me a Heathen/Pagan...you won't be the first...
