RE: $$$ at races...

I ignored this thread for the most part, so excuse me if I'm repeating something that has already been stated.

It seems that what's being proposed here is 100% pay back of entry fees to one or more categories (Pro/1/2, and maybe others?). I don't support this as a policy for the following reasons:

1. Race promoters should be free to determine what will work best for them. If riders don't like it, then they shouldn't come to the race or come back the following year. Good races get attendance, bad races don't.

2. I don't like the idea of race entry fees being tied definitively to prizes. (Understanding, of course, that race promoters will decide what's best for their race.) In the situation of the 12 racers, nine of them directly gave their money to the top three and the promoter got nothing. That's no incentive to come to the race in my opinion. It more or less amounts to the non-placed riders subsidizing the placed riders. Another option where the promoter would get nothing from a given race would be to let everyone in that category race free. I bet that would encourage more than 12 to show up to race!

3. I think a better concept of race prizes would be to view entry fees as covering the cost of the race and potential profit/fund-raising for the promoter and/or the promoter's team, and use sponsorship as the way to fill up the prize list.

4. Another question here is what categories, if any, need cash prizes (i.e. should a 37 year old engineer and soon-to-be father be racing for money?), and why people expect money for regional races, but I'll save that one for another day. (I think we actually had that discussion on this list a few years ago.)

See it says "for example". OBRA brass can decide if they want to go 10%,

25% or 32.952% that is not the point...

We just need to have it figured out and standarized so racers/promoters

need to know what to expect.

Of course the wording should be "100% minimum payout for XYZ Category".

That way if you have some sponsor willing to pony up a few more bucks

you simply divide the amount by the number of placing riders and add it

to each one's winnings.

Cheers.

I beg to differ the races put on by Veloshop which paid six deep for

offered even the fourth place riders who worked hard the opportunity to

in. Those who were unaware were pleasantly surprised by recieving cash

and

sixth place was able to recoup entry and a couple of bucks for gas.

I have been pounding on the 100% payout program so I should clarify how

this works. OBRA needs to standardize the payout structure and the

promoters need to stick to it...

For example 100% payout for top 25%.

12 guys show up and pay $30 each for entry fees ($360)

This is divided among the top 3 (25%) in the category. So maybe $180 for

1st place, $110 for second place and $70 for third place.

The breakdown and depth % should be determined and writted into the OBRA

rules. That way everyone always knows exactly what to expect.

The Intermountain Cup in Utah does something similar to this and it

works great. The payout schedule is always listed in their race handbook

(also a good idea). For the record they happen to be the best run

races/series I have EVER attended--anywhere.

See their website www.intermountaincup.com to learn more about it!

Thanks for listening.
