Jason asks what I think about this. I don't think he really wants me to say
what I think about complaining about prizes of any sort. It really would
not be appropriate for a public forum. Give it a break. Name other sports
that routinely offer prizes other than medals and trophies for even beginner
competitors. The routine offering of prizes of value gives many bike racers
the idea that they deserve a prize or are in some odd way a "pro". This is
incorrect. If you don't like the potential prizes then don't go to the race
but never complain about prizes, before or after the race. Especially if you
have never actually put on a race.
As a point of interest, there is no correlation between prize list and
number or even quality of competitor at bike races in Oregon, except
possible at the very most elite level. Given that race organizers have a
limited amount of organizational energy I think most of them spend too much
of this precious entity on a prize list when it could be better spent on
other aspects of the event.

Subject: *****SPAM***** [OBRA Chat] Racing For Pies?
Hello OBRA,
I am usually not one to complain about payouts at bike races because I do
race for fun, however the Cherry Pie Road Race just bugs me. I have heard
the past couple years it is the biggest road race of the year in reguards to
attendance, yet all you get for placing is a CHERRY PIE??? You train all
winter, and if you place all you get is a pie? No one else as a problem
with this?
What do other people think of this? I know a couple weeks ago there was
some talk about prize lists and payouts at races. Why do so many people
show up especially people from out of state to race for Pies?
Maybe OBRA people just like racing for pies, and in order to increase summer
race attendence promoters should drop cash prizes and give away pies!
I do want to thank the promoter for putting on such a great event, and
taking the time out the their schedule to put on the event, I would just
like to see you do better then donated pies as your prize list.
