Wheel upgrade question(s)

eri-@fusium.com

2006-01-27

The DA 10 and now I believe the Ultegra 10 freehub bodies use a different

spline pattern. It's deeper, probably to increase contact area. The 10spd

cassettes will fit on the 8/9 speed bodies, but definitely not the other way

around.

A lot of modern wheels are still using the 8/9 body, which is moste likely

why it worked for you.

Interesting. I was able to do it, but perhaps I was lucky on the wheel

brand I used. It was Shimano compatible, but not a Shimano wheel.

I second that, I ride Shimano 10, and 9 will not fit on my Rolf 10 hub.

Negative on that, George. The new Shimano Dura Ace 10 and Ultegra 10

speed

 hubs won't take a 9 speed cassette (they're too wide), but a 10 speed

cassette will fit on the 8/9/10 speed 105 level hubs such as in

R500-R560

wheels, older Dura Ace and Ultegra, and on most aftermarket wheelsets.

You

just have to use the supplied spacer behind the 10 speed Shimano

cassette.

If you want to upgrade, you will have to change both shifters, rear

derailleur, chain, cassette. You can use the crank set, but may have

to

change the rings, although many times you do not have to do so.

It seems a majority of the wheelsets take 10 speed cassettes. My

bike

upgrade.

 Rear derailleur? Shifters? Chain?

I don't want to bite off more than I can (financially) chew and I'm

I'd have to agree with the "stick with the 9 speed" opinion. My

understanding is that most new wheels are 9/10 compatable (though some

might require a little different shimming). You can upgrade to 10 speed

as your budget allows.

Don't forget that in racing the neutral support wheels are more commonly

9 speed and therefore you're much less likely to have shifting problems

if you find yourself in the position to need one.

Wheelsets are generally 9/10 speed compatible. I'm thinking you'll

definitely need the new derailluer

Don't do it. In addition to that new 10spd cassette, you'd need new

shifters, maybe an new rear derailleur, and new chain at minimum. Stay

with 9.

A nine speed Shimano cassette will work on a new Shimano wheel as the

wheels are 9/10 speed.

If you want to upgrade, you will have to change both shifters, rear

derailleur, chain, cassette. You can use the crank set, but may have to

change the rings, although many times you do not have to do so.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Wheel upgrade question(s)

I'd like to upgrade my wheels this year and have a couple questions on

what else I need to consider before I do it.

It seems a majority of the wheelsets take 10 speed cassettes. My bike

currently has a 9 speed / 105 drivetrain. Aside from getting the wheels

and a new cassette, are there any other parts I would be forced to

upgrade. Rear derailleur? Shifters? Chain?

I don't want to bite off more than I can (financially) chew and I'm

curious if moving to a 10 speed cassette will ripple through the rest of

the bike.

Thanks,

Mike

Don't do it. In addition to that new 10spd cassette, you'd need new

shifters, maybe an new rear derailleur, and new chain at minimum. Stay with

9.
