The DA 10 and now I believe the Ultegra 10 freehub bodies use a different
spline pattern. It's deeper, probably to increase contact area. The 10spd
cassettes will fit on the 8/9 speed bodies, but definitely not the other way
around.
A lot of modern wheels are still using the 8/9 body, which is moste likely
why it worked for you.

Interesting. I was able to do it, but perhaps I was lucky on the wheel
brand I used. It was Shimano compatible, but not a Shimano wheel.
