For all those that don't know, that main video is an example of "Alley Cat"
racing. A few checkpoints are set up all over town and the "messengers" have
to "pick up packages", or check in, at these places. The person to complete
all of the check-ins and make it back to the finish line first is the
winner.

It's no-holds barred racing. You have to know the city streets like the back
of your hand and be able to make it through in one piece in order to finish.
Obviously all applicable laws do not apply and the racing is illegal,
however, it still takes place. They even have some in Boston and in DC.

Most people that ride in the city usually ride like this because they have
to. You just get used to traffic and the ebb and flow of it. I was born and
raised in NYC and learned how to ride my bike in the streets. I've been to
some of these alley cat races (the after party's are pretty wild) and they
are really intense.

I've got to say that I used to ride like that and it is a real rush. Of
course, I was fortunate to not get doored or hit (knock on wood). That being
said, when I go back now, I can't ride like that anymore. It is crazy and I
have lost that particular edge.

That being said, the crit races can be pretty fun because most riders are
pretty experienced in traffic.

From a former New Yorker.
