Schreck, George
It is a good rule. Someone could get killed going around the gate, and
Flecha was quoted in Cycling News as saying that when he was in the
Boonen group, he started to go around the gate to continue the chase and
Boonen grabbed him and stopped him. Her said that if Boonen had not
done so he would have been under the train because it came by just about
the time he would have been halfway across. It is a rule to maintain
safety, and just because Hoste and the others were able to make it, does
not mean you want to encourage that behavior as it almost cost Flecha
his life in pursuing them. The reason why they did not penalize Boonen
is because the safety issue was moot once the train had passed.

If he hadn't been on the cobles, he probably would have come out a lot
better injury wise.
As for the DQ, didn't Boonen go around the gates too? It just so
happens it was after the train but the rules stated that you had to stop
at the gate. 5 of them should be DQ'd not the 4. Bummer for Discovery,
that would have been nice making up for Hincapies accident.

If his steer tube broke like they said it did, he probably
dropped his bars and sat up abruptly to avoid going otb. Didn't look to
me like there was any steer tube left on his bike. Guess he's going in
for surgery on his scapula? Bummer. Would've loved to have seen him and
Cancellara (that swiss kid) duke it out in the finale.
Think the disqualification will be reversed?
