I remember reading an article by Bob Roll from several years ago, I forget where. Anyways, he was telling a similar tale of racing Paris Roubaix and having his stem break in one particularly rough section of cobbles. His solution for escaping a seriously painful crash was to ride towards the largest Belgian spectator, preferrably the sturdy working class type, and dive into his arms. And there he ended up, like a damsel in distress, gazing into the eyes of his hero.
