Simply put: It is the quickest form of GROUP communication to have messages
delivered via a listserve. Any other form of communication requires overhead
and someone to maintain. A user/membe rof the list simply sends out their
message to a single address (i.e. obra@list.obra.org) and the message is
distributed at the speed of light to all members of the list.
With a listserve (such as majordomo), the member can pretty much maintain
the list themselves. For exampe, the member who last week wanted to be
removed from the list could simply send a note to 'unsubscribe' and the list-serve engine will handle the request and remove said member from the
distribution list.
Now.. you can do this yourself by adding each and every member of the OBRA community to your own email list (which is what I am sure some people had
down back when OBRA was small and email was new), but with over a 1000
members, many mail tools (Outlook, for example) would choke on a mail alias
that large. The listserve handles all for you without doing anything more
than signing up for the service.
