I've been on lovastatin for a few years now, but I'm more recreational than racer. It hasn't slowed me down as far as I can tell. Your doctor should do periodic liver function tests to detect a rare but serious side effect. (I sound like a commercial, don't I?) Read on: http://medicine.ucsd.edu/ses/adverse_effects.htm

FWIW: I'm on Zetia (ezetimibe), too, which is a cholesterol absorption blocker. I'm also Type 1 diabetic (insulin-dependant), so my endocrine system is completely whacked. Modern medicine is keeping me alive and productive. I don't think it can do anything about my looks, though:
