I agree with this.
The only thing that really makes me scratch my head is why exercise for
most of us can only be done in a gym? The irony of getting in one's car
to drive to the gym (other than weather excuses, which I also find weak)
to go to the gym or up to the Fairmont Loop to exercise. We would not
have so much obesity if we actually incorporate exercise into our daily,
meaningful routine.
Spoken as an elitist 'cycling commuter' not an elitist cycling
competitor. Frankly most of us compete in vain, we are not being paid
or will we ever do it as a career. I would hate to use the H word.
If someone is in the way at the gym, I let them know I would like to
use the machine. Never been denied yet.

As a long time competitor in both cycling and triathlon and also a gym
owner
I have followed with some interest the ongoing discussion about weight
training, gym etiquette, etc. There certainly does seem to be some
elitism
trickling in from the cycling community. Several of the replies have
hit it
on the head. There is not only nothing wrong with lifting weights or
participating in spin classes, but, in fact it is advantagous for
those
participants, even if they don't cycle competitively. The news is full
of
the problems about childhood and adult obesity, and if a spin class or
weightlifting benefits the health of the participant, then we, as a
part of
the population that espouses fitness, should applaud them, not
castigate
them.
As far as gym etiquette goes, if a person, man or woman, is hogging a
specific machine or weight set, and if they won't let you work in with
them,
a quiet word to the gym manager or owner will quickly solve the
matter.
Gyms cater to the mases, not to the elite weightlifter. And that
elite
lifter , almost without exception, will be happy to share his/her
knowledge
and work with you especially if they find out you are a competitive
cyclist.

OK OK I give.
I admit I haven't been to the gym in a while, although I've spent
time doing
all the things we're now pocking fun at. So I guess I have to laugh at
myself too.
I commend anyone that is focused on personal achievement, for whatever
reason, even vanity. So here I am standing and applauding there
efforts.

But heck, Lets LAUGH at each other once in while, and remember we are
the
ones riding around in skimpy black unidies every weekend.
The only thing that disturbs me on this thread is the image of a bunch
of
middle aged naked dudes hanging out in the Mens Lounge.

All of you are amazing. I try so hard to not react to everything you
are
saying,
but I end up so pissed off I have to speak up. Its hard for me to
understand
that the only way a person can be fit, strong, cool, and even healthy
is to
ride a bike. Heaven forbid people having other enjoyment and
aspirations
beyond
cycling. So what if a person only works out to have larger muscles or
to
look
better. Maybe ask yourselves why you do many things you do. I'm willing
to
bet
a lot of your answers are going to be pretty funky.
As for the grunting, its related to something called the Valsalva
Maneuver.
This
involves trying to exhale to a closed throat, which builds pressure in
the
abdomen. When this pressure is released it generates a grunting type
sound.
This is only beneficial in certain types of exercises. I can't speak
for all
of
the grunters, but most seem to be doing this correctly.
And the standing around. The American College of Sports Medicine
recommends
2-5
minutes of rest between sets for strength training. This is not
muscular
endurance or lifting for hypertrophy, this is for pure strength. So
resting
up to 5 minutes between sets makes for a lot of standing around.
Also, I'm pretty sure that spin class and riding bikes are two
different
things.
I've yet to go to a spin class that is designed for cyclists, they are
designed
to give people power and endurance workouts. I've been criticized in
the
past
for doing things too much like a cyclist and not getting the full
benefit of
what the instructor is trying to pass on. So there are certainly
benefits to
changing your style a bit.
What I'm trying to put across with this message is that people go to
the gym
and
do things for different reasons, a lot of reasons that we don't
understand.
Isn't that the best part of all of this. So many types of people with
so
many
different goals coming to one place to share the activities of the
gym.
Maybe
thats why there's so much socializing. It seems like some folks on the
list
might be a little too critical of what others are doing. Maybe its time
to
be a
little more critical of ourselves.
