No, OBRA does not offer insurance against loss of race equipment. To my
knowledge, such an insurance product is not available. If it was available
the cost would be high as most races lose something. The loss of 2 signs
is not actually very unusual. Signs are the most common thing lost. After
that is radios. Jim's point is a good one; if you see someone taking a
race sign down they are probably stealing it. You should do the same thing
that you would do if you saw someone stealing anything else. I suspect
that most radios are not actually stolen but "forgotten". If you have one
of these, just give it back. We will be happy, not pissed off. For what
it is worth, signs and radios are not the only things that goes missing.
OBRA has had several generators stolen, as well as video camera, tents, PS
systems, etc. Basically anything not nailed down has been stolen.
I have, in the past, looked at insuring the OBRA equipment against theft
and damage. It would be possible to insure it while at the velodrome, but
not while out at races. Occasionally loss of equipment has been covered by
the race orgsanizer's home owner's insurance, but generally not. The
bottom line is that insurance is not the answer, loss prevention is. You
need to help. If you see OBRA equipment going somewhere it does not belong
intervene and get information back to us.
OBRA charges race organizers for these losses. This is really the only way
that OBRA can deal with this. If the cost of the loss is large collecting
this can be difficult since it often will come out of the race organizer's
own pocket. The cost of these losses and, more importantly, the risk of
sustaining such a loss is something that inhibits the production of races
and increases the cost to race organizers. Ultimately this comes back to
members as increased entry fees.

This seems to be a reoccurring theme, is there anything that can be done
to shift this paradigm, sans posting a volunteer at every sign?
Does obra offer race material insurance?

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Signs as souvenirs
Just wanted to let you folks know that we had two signs disappear from
the road side at this weekend's Cherry Pie. At Independence and Ryals,
one sign went away, and the sign crew put up another. It, too,
disappeared.
If you see anyone removing signs, please get a plate number and vehicle
description (assuming they're not on foot, riding a bike or airborne).
The sexy fabric "Bike Event Ahead" signs run $400-800...(I don't know
yet, but it's a lot).
The OBRA metal signs and tripods are in the neighborhood of $100/set to
replace. We lost one of each of these types of signs.
I know other promoters have had equipment removed and it has really hurt
their ability to financially justify putting on these events.
If you see signs being taken down, please feel free to write down plate
numbers, descriptions, etc, and shoot them to the promoter.
Thanks for your participation at the Cherry Pie, and we'll see you at
the races!
