Dave,
I am 235-250 depending on the time of year. I ride nothing but custom built
wheels because of my size. All the factory built wheels I have owned were
ruined very shortly after I got them. My first custom road and mountain
wheels were built by Erik Vickers at Hutch's in Bend, (now I think he is at
the Bike Peddler in Salem) and I have been riding them for over 8 years and
they have never come out of true. Last year, Dean at Bike Central built me
a killer set of Zipp 808 rims laced to Dura Ace hubs for my triathlon bike.
I have almost 1400 miles on them and have hit my share of bumps and they are
still in pristine shape. I rode in an Ironman with these wheels and Tufo
clincher/tubular tires so I feel I got the best of both worlds. Zipp makes
a Clydesdale wheelset in their 404 and the 808 rims but I would go with the
Dura Ace hubs instead of the factory hubs and someone like Dean, Erik, or
Dan Houghton build you a set. All these guys have great reputations for
building strong wheels. Granted, I have not done a bunch sprint with these
wheels or collided with someone but have hit potholes and gone over curbs
(sorry Dean) and they haven't exploded yet. Email me if you want contact
info for any of those guys. Hope this helps.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Carbon wheels
I am interested in getting some carbon wheels and have been looking at a few
models. I know a lot of people out there are riding on carbon wheels, and I
was curious for some general feedback on your experiences.
I am looking at Mavic Carbones, Reynolds Stratus DV Clincher, Zipp 404, and
Shimano Dura-Ace wheels. I like the idea of ease of service of a clincher,
but have heard that the ride quality of a tubular makes a huge difference.
I weigh about 200lbs, so strong is good. I need to lose weight on my body
before I worry about the lightest set of wheels on the market. Thus,
reliability and strength are key.
Please reply off-list.
Thank you for your time.
