"...was actually
going to arrest the guy but we decided it would only make him more
angry at the next rider he passed."
I encourage everyone to consider some of the possible results if the
logic here was followed consistently:
- We decided not to arrest the person who robbed a corner market
because that might make them rob a bank next.
- We decided not to charge a child molester because they might rape
an adult next.
- We decided not to arrest a drunk driver because that might make
them drink more next time.
Does this rational make sense? Not to me it doesn't.

I have read at least 20 emails
sent back and forth concerning the North Plains incident. While the
Police Chief in North Plans does appear to be an idiot there are other
law enforcement officials who seem to be concerned and willing to help
riders. My son and I are training for a 12,000 mile bicycle tour of the
US. We ride a lot out by Forest Hills golf Club. A few weeks ago a
driver (with no other traffic on the road) attempted to run us off the
road by speeding past us at an increased speed while blaring on the
horn. My son was enough ahead that he caught up with him at a stop sign
(the driver continued to honk the horn and yell obscenities and use
hand gestures) and was able to get his plate number. A Washington
County sheriff called and took all the information. He called back
later and was actually going to arrest the guy but we decided it would
only make him more angry at the next rider he passed. The officer did
issue him a warning however. In our case at least it seemed like there
was real concern and indeed a positive action on the part of the
sheriff's office.
