Actually, we made it longer, because a number of those over 60 who do tend to train for bike racing, did not like the fact that the distance was shorter , thus negating the benefits of much of their training. On that basis, we assumed most bike racers could ride for 25 miles on a flat course. The sixty plus masters men just raced a 37 mile road race that was reasonably hilly, so it did not seem to be much of a stretch to do a 25 mile distance on a flat course.
