A rainy day fuund is a good idea. I suspect we had one and it was used for the truck. Unfortunately, it rained more than expected. The weather forecasters in Oregon are hopeless. In the long run, a fund is the best solution.

Unfortunately I don't see this sort of thing as a one time problem when considering the growth of the sport and the growth of the general population. The rising need to be able to respond to the regulatory requirements imposed on OBRA events in an effective manner can only be financially supported by establishing a rainy day fund. So... our dues go up a little, it is certainly better way to do business then donations or surcharges.

Not that I have a problem with a donation, as I was happy to do so, but it seems to be a poor way to address these issues. If this is something that OBRA must have, we need a funding source that more or less guaranties that the funds will be raised. Donations do not guaranty that the necessary funds will be raised, and given the mandatory nature of the sign requirements, that is not acceptable.
I would think the OBRA rules should permit a special surcharge to be added to the dues for a particular year. OBRA dues are fairly low as it is, and an additional $15 surcharge seems fairly minor. I realize that some people may think that any additional cost is too much, but this is a necessary cost of racing and should be borne by the membership generally. A surcharge would more or less ensure that the necessay funds are raised. Donations are fine for items that are discretionary, but it is not an adequate mechanism for items that are necessary to conduct races. Juniors could still be exempted from the surcharge.

Not knowing all those details, but assuming pretty much what you and Candi just stated was why I posted what I did. I am not sure what I would have purchased with the donation I made, but I do know I can live without it for now. I am sure any amount people donate will just get OBRA closer to being able to continue providing quality support for races.

It has sounded to me like it has finally come to the point where new road signs are a must. The old ones are heavy, cumbersome, possibly dangerous, But mainly simply no longer qualified, no longer approved... after a decade or so of being accomodating it sounds like counties and state are starting to say no. Also if a vehicle did hit a sign and someone got hurt: the ensuing liability of having used a non-qualified sign.
It is not going to be easy to pick out the new sign/stand that best fit obra's requirements... i.e. easy to handle, fast setup and takedown, all fit in the truck, hard to steal, really durable (or easy to fix), stay put in strong wind, yet light,?, etc, etc.. this is simply not going to be cheap.
(this all my personal opinion.. i did do a litle bit of research into qualified signs, etc, result was my donation increased.)

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question but, since Ron is begging (albeit jokingly).....is OBRA in under-funded? I realize more money is better than less money, but is there any risk of failure due to finances? I don't want to give up my expensive components unless OBRA is on the verge of collapse (also joking).

Just my 2cents.... Why not ride some semi-expensive component just one more
