What about a sign sponsor. Their could be more than one. If we need 30 signs we charge 1000.00 per sign. You could put their name on the sign. How long is the sings good for. A name on a sign for 5 years for 1000.00 is a great deal.Cliff McCann

Agreed. We need a fund. I would appoint you, since you have superior orgnaizational skills, and I have none whatsoever. However, this probably is a project for Kenji.

-------------- Original message -------------- From: Steve Brown Do not really disagree that much. Was really suggesting establishing a capital funds project to cover items like this. Just need someone to take charge.

I do appreciate the anology. I wish I had some of Tim's ability though.

-------------- Original message -------------- From: Steve Brown I know it can be dangerous to getting involved with a contradiction to George, kind of like trying to hold Tim Luther on your hip high into turn one at Alpenrose on the bell lap of a matched sprint, but I think the one time request for capital funding is not a bad idea.
Every couple a years we need a few new things. That is the time to ask. If there is a serious need for capital funding, suggest someone establish a committee, develop a plan and see how it works. Beyond that, a simple request for money to buy some new stuff is simple enough.

Not that I have a problem with a donation, as I was happy to do so, but it seems to be a poor way to address these issues. Donations do not guaranty that the necessary funds will be raised, and given the mandatory nature of the sign requirements, that is not acceptable.

I would think the OBRA rules should permit a special surcharge to be added to the dues for a particular year. OBRA dues are fairly low as it is, and an additional $15 surcharge seems fairly minor. I realize that some people may think that any additional cost is too much, but this is a necessary cost of racing and should be borne by the membership generally. A surcharge would more or less ensure that the necessay funds are raised. Donations are fine for items that are discretionary, but it is not an adequate mechanism for items that are necessary to conduct races. Juniors could still be exempted from the surcharge.

Not knowing all those details, but assuming pretty much what you and Candi just stated was why I posted what I did. I am not sure what I would have purchased with the donation I made, but I do know I can live without it for now. I am sure any amount people donate will just get OBRA closer to being able to continue providing quality support for races.

It has sounded to me like it has finally come to the point where new road signs are a must. The old ones are heavy, cumbersome, possibly dangerous, But mainly simply no longer qualified, no longer approved... after a decade or so of being accomodating it sounds like counties and state are starting to say no. Also if a vehicle did hit a sign and someone got hurt: the ensuing liability of having used a non-qualified sign.
It is not going to be easy to pick out the new sign/stand that best fit obra's requirements... i.e. easy to handle, fast setup and takedown, all fit in the truck, hard to steal, really durable (or easy to fix), stay put in strong wind, yet light,?, etc, etc.. this is simply not going to be cheap.
(this all my personal opinion.. i did do a litle bit of research into qualified signs, etc, result was my donation increased.)
