Todd,

Great points.

This would prove much easier to do (since the shots already exist). We'd need a way to filter the thousands of pics and find the ones that would be selected.

Ted, Shane and the rest of you photographers out there, would this be something you'd be willing to help with?

Other ideas?

Fish

Hey Fish,

I really like the idea of an OBRA calendar. That sounds like a really good concept....BUT (...not BUTT) the flip side is that I'd imagine a number of team sponsors wouldn't be so thrilled to see their name associated with a clothing optional calendar (particularly if these are team photo shoots with sponsors named).

It's definitely something each team would need to contact their sponsor about, and even then calling up a sponsor to ask permission might raise some concerns with certain sponsors. With 70+ teams, I suppose there might be 12 sponsors that would be cool with it. You never know.

However, running with that concept a bit further, why not an OBRA calendar that shows race shots? There are a ton of great photographers shooting incredible shots at many OBRA events.

If there are 12 photographers willing to donate a good photo (or several for consideration) to the cause I think we could end up with a great calendar and there wouldn't even need to be a photo shoot. The material is already out there. In exchange for the photo, the photographer would get a full photo credit and put a website address and maybe a small logo under the shot.

This would be great advertising for the photographers, and the concept is already working with photos donated for the OBRA website.

The calendar could feature shots from each racing discipline, and feature junior and women racers, maybe a couple shots of beginner racers. In addition to fund raising it could be an avenue for promoting growth in the sport. Of course, it would be cool to have some good hard core race shots featuring some notable OBRA racers too.

I'd definitely put down some money to buy a calendar I could hang on my wall at work.

When Candi asked for donations to help pay for road signs, I immediately thought of a recent fund raising effort I and a few other cyclists participated in locally for a youth shelter. If you've ever seen the movie "Calendar Girls", you already are familiar with the concept of a calendar capturing staged shots of regular folks in their birthday suits, but done so in a tasteful way so as not to really show anything better left to the imagination. I have had no luck conctacting the photographer who did the last three Men of the Willamette Valley Calendars. If you've see one of these, you get the idea.

I've asked our own Ted Turner to be our man behind the lens. He's already storyboarding, looking into production costs, etc. If any of you have seen Ted's photos of bike events, he does very fine work when he's not officiating. Shane Young may also be helping out with the photos, and you have likely seen his work from many of his pics last season covering bike races of all types all year long all over the state.

Reproducing this concept with our cycling crew, I envisioned a calendar with one of our 70+ teams as the primary pic for each month. We could do insets around certain big events and could even put the race dates on the calendar if would could get concrete dates in time for the printing.

The shots will be staged, but it will likely happen either at races, or at nearby venues on the same day as some of the big races. Hopefully, we won't "need bigger buns" to keep the shots "clean".

I need a show of hands from teams who would be willing to provide 5-10 subjects for these shoots. Gentle Lovers and S&M, I know you guys are already in, so no need to respond. ;-)

I'm hoping for a mix of male and female squads, so ladies, don't be shy!

Please let me know if you're interested in buying one, or interested in being on one, or both! Cost will likely be $25 and I'm hoping all OBRA members will buy one to help support the organization.

Details to follow as Ted and I solidify the plan. Nothing will likely happen until after Cherry Pie and no shoots will be staged until we have a little warmer weather. ;-)

Regards,

Jim Fischer
