Re: Equal Pay in Women's Cycling

Tony,
the low to mid-level riders need to be supported enough to continue competing. Without riders at that level racing and training at their best, riders like Aaron Olsen and Doug Ollerenshaw never develop to their potential. And without riders like them, guys like Chris Horner and Levi Leipheimer never reach THEIR potential because they're never challenged.

Next thing you know, U.S. Cycling drops right back into the dark ages.

High levels of cycling competition require 30-hour weekly training schedules, which require more recovery time and extra sleep than anybody really understands. This is not a realistic task if you have to work full time, no matter how talented and dedicated you are.

Add in travel time, and Elite Cycling is a 50 hour a week job in itself. All the while aggravated by countless masses of arrogant pricks who think that you get to "play for a living", when nothing could be farther from the truth.

oh man, there are so many reasons i think this is a silly comment, i'm not even sure where to start. "pro" in cycling is definitely a misleading moniker related to some sports, i'll give you that. being said, i wont be shedding a tear for the underpaid bike racers any time soon. sorry. the truly gifted and dedicated are able to make a comfortable living, beyond that, just like every other sport, we are forced to do it because we like to.

How about a petition to actually get paid to be a "pro" cyclist? Supposedly there are hundreds of pro cyclists in the country--most of them spend more than they make just to make the races, most of the rest make less than poverty wage. A few are lucky enough to make a living only equal median income levels.

I have signed these petitions, but the real question should be when will these fine athletes (men and women) actually start getting compensated relative to their performance level and contribution to the industry and sport?
