i found my own money once. Got home, checked my pockets and was like crap where is my money? i know i just put ~$40 in there. so i jump back on my bike and backtrack. And there's the bills sitting right on top of a sewer grate. I had to be ultra careful picking it up, it was so close to falling in.
I found a really nice 17mm Snap-on open end wrench. super quality, still have it it is one of my favorite...
i know i and others have found lots of other stuff. My favorite trick is to reach down and grab things without stopping. I remember when we first started riding seriously, some crazy guy told us we needed to practice doing this sort of thing, cause if you drop your waterbottle in a race, you will want to turn around, go back and get it... Errr didn't take long how stupid that advice was, and no i never tried it, well least not in a race.
Although i used the technique to snatch someones rear blinking light (a nice expensive one too) off of broadway just before getting crushed. The guy was hauling and took a bit to catch him, he was like yeah i heard fall, didn't feel like stopping, figured it was already gone... (by the way, zip ties work great for securing blinking lights to seat bags. loop it all the way around the light.... )
I too had a nail drive all the way through the rim and another time i had a nail go into the tire, "bounce" off the tube and come back out the tire. No flat..
Recently stopped to help a someone who had picked up a nail, they didn't want to fix it, but were just going to walk to max... but the tire was still holding air, so i was like well push the nail in rest of the way (so it not hitting the stays), you might get home... when i looked back she was riding...

Best find for me was money. I was stone cold broke and hungry. I was riding home from work in the dark and the rain on a borrowed bike. Mine was being warrantied. Saw some cash and stopped to pick it up..was a wad of 1's and 5's...I looked around and found some more heading towards some bushes...1's and 10's this time..as I got closer to the bushes I realized maybe this wasn't such a good idea....dark...rain...money leading up to a bush!! So I grabbed the last bit of money i could reach before the bushes ran back to my bike and booked like heck out of there. When I got home I had $47 which was enough for groceries for the next week! Top rommen, Kraft macaroni and cheese and cheap waffle mix galore!!!
I have also found lots of metal things that tend to end up in my tires. The best was a pair of tweezers that went thru the tire, tube, and rim!!!
