Re: Kermesse Tires

My input is.....Road tires. Not cyclocross tires. The extended road portions of this race venue will put lower pressure ccx tires at a disadvantage. Most of the courses Jeff Mitchem ran in January were lots good pavement and not a small part on the PIR track itself. The "off road" portions were mostly old asphalt or very hard packed gravel with very very little dirt/grass sections that could get muddy enough to warrant the advantage of ccx tire traction. I ran high volume road tires. 700x25c. I especially like the specialized Roubaix series tires which have a 25c casing with a 23c tread width. I ran the Sworks open tubular version without a flat for all three weeks. I'm very close to 200 lbs and I ran them about 100-105 psi. My carbon road bike held up nicely as well. The top end gearing of a road bike will be helpful (not totally essential maybe, but helpful), over a lower geared cross bike.

Also, this is a great series. This kind of off road racing on road bikes is a blast. If you haven't tried it, Please support it by coming out to race, so we encourage more of these races in the future!

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Kermesse Tires

Does anyone have a recommendation on tire selection for the upcoming Kermesse races in September? Is a road bike with certain tires a good choice, or more of a cyclocross set up?

Thanks.
