I did not take my juniors or kids to Swan Island this year because the 17 year-old and the 12 year-old would have raced at 9am and the younger siblings did not race until 1pm. Parents were just not willing to hang out for 4 hours so both sets of kids got to race--end result none got to race.
I really wish promoters would consider that many junior racer have younger siblings or parents who also race.
I truly believe there would be more participation if the juniors were closer to mid day so racing parents would be more inclined to come early or stay late so their junior could also race. This would also open the door for more younger kids to get hooked by doing the kid races which wisely tend to be mid-day.
I love the fact that cross has put the juniors near mid-day. I really believe this increases the junior participation. It helps when the younger siblings have something to look forward to and it helps when the parents have their race within a couple hours of their children's races.
I know Mike has the stats I do believe that the average age of bike racers is fairly old. We need the juniors.

Having
a lower fee for the entry level categories could also encourage participation by
new to the sport riders, and admirable idea.

I
use to race motorcycles and they always had higher registration fees for
pros. Fewer participants, Longer Races and Much larger cash
prizes.

My guess is because the
winnings are larger. This way, the 4/5's aren't paying for the 1/2's
winnings.

Can anyone provide any good reason why there is a sliding
scale for the entry fees at Swan Island this weekend? I know $5 is
pretty common for junior races, but why do the 4/5s only have to pay $15 while
the 3's/Masters pay $20, and the 1/2s pay $25? I've never seen anything
like this for a one day race before. I've seen it in stage races, which
makes sense, because the higher categories generally do longer races (more
days/stages).
Why are the higher categories being charged more.
It's almost as if they are being punished for staying w/ the sport and
improving!
And, please don't be a smart-donkey and respond w/ put on a
race yourself, see what the costs are like, etc etc. I am very thankful
to all promoters who put on events (especially those who do so outside of the
PDX Metro area). I am just very curious why the higher categories are
being asked to pay more. Times are tough people, $5-10 is alot of money
:)
