if we were voting on the issue I would vote for the smile and wave vs stopping and confronting.
Here's why: After the confrontation on the side of the road, did the driver of the old brown Chevy see the situation from a different perspective saying "Gosh, I never thought of it like that, sorry for honking my horn back there, have a great rest of your ride." or is he going to throw a beer can at the next cyclist he sees?

I do not think we get anywhere by turning the other cheek. We should confront stupidity and intolerance wherever it arises. Under your strategy we would only confront people who would tend agree with us, as opposed to the biggest offenders.

Beleive me I undrserstand your hostility all to well, and obviously I am not afraid to voice my opinion. As I said in my first post there is a time and a place for everything. I am also learning a lot as I become older and ANGER will get us no where!!! I really hope that you will think about this experience and try to understand that flipping someone off and then trying to explain yourself to someone generaly doesn't work out very well.

Yes, it happened in the sticks. No, I wasn't alone with him when he came running out of the business yelling at me. No, I do not let these people intimidate me. I do not let people wrong me or anyone else and then not say anything because they might hit me or shoot me. Bullies don't run my life. Besides that, I didn't confront him, I just stopped in the road in front of the business that he was parked at. Was I supposed to ride home a different way to avoid him? Maybe you would be the next guy he harrassed and he just used his truck to unleash his hostility? You can go ahead and be a wall flower and not stop assholes like this but don't call me stupid because I won't take it!
Why don't you post this to the whole list and see what other people think? I think that getting him off the road and keeping him from actually hurting someone else is what I am morally obligated to do.

I am not just trying to be a smart ass but seriously there is a time and a place for everything. I have found in my 39 years of experience that when ever we track someone down to explain our side it never really goes the way we intend. I completely understand how you must have felt as I am sure most of us here do. I will be perfectly honest, I have always been a bit of a hot head when it comes to less than courteous drivers but after reading the recently posted story here on the OBRA blog, about the gentleman that had a GUN pulled on him. I will think more than twice about who I explain anything to. I have been trying very hard to just go with the smile and wave retort.
Please don't take this as a personal attack, I just want us all to get along!!!!!

I was on the newly chip sealed Helvetia rd yesterday riding along in the center of the lane trying to find the smooth spots in the road as there was no traffic at the time. All of the sudden there is an older brown Chevy p.u. whizzing by my left shoulder blaring his horn. My reaction was to fly the bird and keep going.
He turned left at Jackson Quarry rd. as well as I did. I came upon his truck at McCann tire and stopped in the road to see just who this jack ass was. He came running out of the business yelling at me about how illegal I was and that I was going to end up in a ditch! I tried to explain to him that if he would have tooted his horn a couple of hundred feet behind me, I would have gladly moved over for him and that the ch ip seal was hard for me to ride. He heard none of it and yelled at me. Of course I told him he was wrong and I did have as much right to be there as he did.
This infuriated the man. He ran towards me and was kicking gravel on me from less than 5' away and swung his arms wildly as he was calling me a bitch.
At that time the guy from McCann's told him to stop. I tried to explain to the shop guy what had happened, he told me to leave. I was on the street...not on his property. I got the license number of the truck and left.
The police said they were going to go talk to him but wouldn't give me a return call to say how it went.
I later learned that the guy that harassed me was an employee of the tire shop. I was a customer of his a month ago. He changed over some tires for my friend. We are both cyclists and wanted to give the small business owner our business.
He won't ge t my b u siness anymore
