i would ride the road up then the trail down. a couple of years ago me and some friends rode the trail up and the road down. it took around 9 hours and those last couple of hours on the volcanic rock were miserable. could've been great but we were so fatigued by then we couldn't get the most out of it. not to mention two flats, a broken seat and running out of water with over three hours to go. bring a water filter! either way you'll get worked. it is a beautiful trail system, this coming from a guy who hates river trails too.
