I asked this question a few years ago and the resounding concensus was
that Crank Bros Egg Beaters are the best for CX. I soon after bought a pair
and am very pleased. They tend to shed mud and debris very well and they
have 4 sides to clip into, making for less fuss when remounting.
CB pedals do not take the SPD cleats (as far as I know). They will come with
the cleats needed if purchased new.
