I also have been happy with SPD's on all my bikes, but have not used any
other kind so can't compare fairly. One (cheapest?) model has a solid center
and can jam up with mud, the others are open along the center axle and have
been fine in all sorts of conditions.
My main advice is to pick one pedal type and use it on all your bikes. I've
heard too many stories about people who grabbed the wrong pair of shoes for
the bike they were riding that day...
