I know my wife has a pair of SPDs she loves (of course she does not use them in muddy races) but would think that Shimano would have put the R&D into their pedal division to produce a great quality product.

I also have been happy with SPD's on all my bikes, but have not used any other kind so can't compare fairly. One (cheapest?) model has a solid center and can jam up with mud, the others are open along the center axle and have been fine in all sorts of conditions.

My main advice is to pick one pedal type and use it on all your bikes. I've heard too many stories about people who grabbed the wrong pair of shoes for the bike they were riding that day...

+1 on SPD's. I have, like, 8 pairs of different models on road, cross, and mountain bikes. I've only, truly, worn out one pair, and I have never had a mechanical caused by a Shimano pedal. And I'm cheap - I buy all mine used. Like Ron said about the Time ATACs - spray and ride. I know folks rave about their ATAC's, and if I wasn't so locked in (so to speak) to my SPD's I'd consider switching to those. But I've heard and seen enough stories about CB pedals literally falling apart or the bearings seizing and the pedal coming unscrewed mid-race, that I have no interest in them.
