If you get a chance, check out the Eddy Merckx video at Lakeside (La Tete du
Corse? or something like that). Interesting shots of the riders picking up
Coke and Pepsi from the team cars and spectators alike. Of course, they
didn't have Whoopass like we have now, but the sugar and caffeine didn't
seem to hurt.

I believe that it has been pretty well shown that caffeine is a wonder drug
that will allow all of us to win the next race (hold on, that doesn't seem
to make sense....).
Anyway, if you're interested in the science, check out the British Journal
of Sports Medicine website (http://www.bjsportmed.com) and do a search on
caffeine. The research abstracts seem to support the notion that caffeine
may enhance performance for endurance athletes. That's why I'm sitting here
in front of the computer with a mug of coffee instead of riding on the
trainer. (That and my son would rather bang on the keyboard than sit on my
handlebars and have me drip sweat on him.)
