I do want to raise one point that can be very important in the case for
osteoporosis for women. Caffeine is a calcium blocker and it is one of the
things that women especially 35 and older should pay close attention to. If
you drink or eat a lot of caffeine on a daily basis be sure that you are
taking calcium supplements or are getting good doses of your natural calcium
intake. I was once told by a nurse that just think of it as "peeing out
your bones". Caffeine in high doses is not good for women and their bones.
If you are drinking soy milk or milk or eating yogurt regularly, good for
you. But most women don't get enough calcium.
And they might not if they think of plain soy milk as equal to cows milk.
Soy = 80 mg calcium /8 oz; cow = about 300 mg/8 oz. = almost a 400%
difference. RDA = 800 to 1200 +++ mg per day. I use little cow's milk, and
am aware of the difference because I limit calcium due to kidney stone
problems.
