The major leak of information and reason many of us are being reissued cards from our CC companies, banks, credit union is Heartlands recent leak. Heartland is the 6th largest credit card/check clearing company out there. Many small businesses use Heartland. You may never have any fraudulant activity on your card but if it was used on a Heartland machine your info could be out there.

You can request that your financial institute reissue you a new card with a new # make sure they don't just send you the same card. You can also just be very vigilant and monitor all transactions on your accounts, though having dealt with lots of these cases its a pain in the butt to go through the steps to combat fraudulent charges. You also then have to go through canceling that account anyway.

It is also a good idea to have some sort of credit monitoring going on. You generally have to pay $10-20 a month for this service but you will be notified right away of any activity on your credit, much quicker alert to you versus stumbling upon it later. The big 3 Equifax, Transunion, Experian all offer this service as well as most banks and CC companies.
