I also have a 11 year old that is hooked on racing. He loves it. I also mentor some youth at the Boys & Girls Club that we are bringing to some races. I would say it is our responsibility to get in touch with the promoter to ask if it is a good beginner course for them. A smart promoter will make there beginner course easy enough for them and any first time racer to do. Get them hooked to MTB racing and they will always do them. I know the Jedi is a Great beginner course (changed 2 years ago). So bring all your kids out and let them give XC a try. Just make sure they can ride 12 miles and be ready for them to be hooked on races.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] keep it old school

yesterday i wrote a kind e-mail asking promoters to just e-mail the group about "extraordinary" conditions that they know about on their courses before we show up to race. the overwhelming response i got was to stop whining. hell, i didn't even whine about anything! i wrote back to a few people explaining that i wrote the e-mail because i want to be able to have my 10 year old son as prepared (that means safe) for the races as possible. the overwhelming response to that was "maybe you shouldn't bring your kids to the races". i had 3 promoters tell me NOT to bring my kids to the races at all.

i never said the course was too hard.
i never said Bear Springs shouldn't have been put on.
i never said degrading comments about anyone personally.
i never said i want money back.
i never said to make the courses easier.
i didn't ask the promoters to do anything except send an e-mail pointing out any special elements of a race.

..and the majority of OBRA says "leave your kid racer at home"

today, don't email me. at all.

to those of you that have this anti-junior racer attitude, you make me sick.
