Even though the weather was very bad I was disappointed the race was shortened HOWEVER, it was the correct decision. I believe many many riders would have succumbed to the cold and been left out on the course with no way back.

Looking forward to the 2010 edition and the full 102 miles!!!!!

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Elkhorn-Dooley Mountain

Miserable weather!! Woke up to heavy rain, 43 degrees. There were reports of
snow and 35 degrees at the top of Dooley Mountain.
We were seeing an incredibly large amount of riders who choose not to ride
the 109 scheduled event today. I recommended that the Cat 4s do a shortened
version. And was flabbergasted when the Chief Ref decided that all the
categories would ride the modified course. Instead of doing the 109 mile
death march in this weather, we would proceed 12 miles out of town, then 7
miles up Dooley. 19 mile race! The pack was definitely smaller, but there
were many quick phone calls to the ones that still had not rolled out of bed
and we saw a decided increase in participation but still had many DNS (did
not start) riders.
I want to thank all the riders for being so gracious with this last minute
change.  It was not what they signed on for, and many were a little
disappointed, but we were really concerned how do deal with hypothermic
riders at the far side of the 109 miles.
This is a wonderful event, and Ernie and his crew work so very hard to put
it on. Please come back and ride the Elkhorn in 2010 - and let's order some
sun!
Candi
