once it's pounded down that far, you're probably likely to never get it back out again. most all steel frames are reamed to their specified diameter only a relatively short distance down the seat tube, hence if you put a 440mm thomson or such into a frame, with only 80mm of it showing, you had better ream the seat tube deeper, or simply cut the post shorter. this can be done by any professional mechanic that posses the proper tools.
