We practiced bunny hops last week. Watch someone who does it well, and then just do it. Eventually you will figure it out. Yeah, I know that sounds curt... CycleOne CrossWorld practices at Hamby Park on Saturday morning at 10:00. You are welcome to come out and join us.

i don't know about anyone else but this is how I bunny hop. and it's how i taught my kids to do it.

bunny hop is an easy concept. lift up front end as high as you feel comfortable, it's kind of like doing a wheelie without leaning back over the rear tire to try and balance the wheelie. anyway, pull up on the bars without moving your weight back very much. now throw the bars forward in a line horizontal to the ground (but off the ground) and maybe a little bit down. when you do this, suck your legs up into your body. why? because when you throw the bars forward with force, the rear wheel comes up to follow the front end forward. now you are in the air. land with equal force on front and rear wheels. if you are destroying your back wheel then you aren't forcing the bars away from your chest hard enough and you are landing with too much weight on the rear. it would be pretty tough to throw the bars forward too hard. you have to do with some serious intent. practice with speed too, don't try and do it riding slow. the rotational mass of your wheels will help the bike be more stable.

bunny hopping to me is similar to doing an ollie on a skateboard.
this nose manual first thing is similar to a nollie in skateboarding.

they both will work but the nose manual first one tends to be way more scary, takes longer and doesn't get me up as far when the bunny hop needs to be done quick to get out of trouble.

I'm glad to hear that this isn't just an easy thing to go out and do. I crewed for a rider in last year's Furnace Creek 508. I was in the support car following the rider as he was moving quickly down a moderate slope when a cattle guard appeared as we rounded a turn. He bunny hopped that cattle guard, a 12 ft span and kept right on pedaling when he landed. Both of us in the support car looked at each other in awe.

After reading all the controversy on how to do this, I think "awe" was the proper response!
