9th Annual Alpenrose Challenge to Draw
Continent's Fastest Track Bike Racers to Portland

Three days of continuous, wheel-to-wheel racing; Admission is free.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Alpenrose Challenge - the largest prize list track race
in the country with a $12,000 purse - will attract the fastest track bike
racers in North America to the steep banks of the Alpenrose Velodrome in
Southwest Portland on July 6-8, competing in Elite Men, Elite Women, and
Masters categories in a variety of race formats.

And the event is free to all spectators.

Top national and local riders - such as Stephen McLaughry, of Camas, Wash.,
and Heather Van Valkenburg, of Vancouver, Wash., will put their muscles,
lungs and courage to the test to capture the big purse.

"The Alpenrose Challenge is without question one of the premier track races
anywhere," said Race Director and event founder Mike Murray. "Nine years
ago we wanted to create a local event that featured national and
international caliber riders and would showcase the unique attraction that
is bicycle track racing. And we succeeded. The event put Alpenrose on the
map for the top riders - and local spectators."

Track racing serves up a wide assortment of race formats. The Alpenrose
Challenge will offer a 4K Pursuit, 500-meter and 1-kilometer Time Trials,
Sprints, Miss & Out, Keirin, Madison, Flying Lap, 10-mile, and Olympic
Sprint. A complete description of all track races at the Alpenrose
Challenge can be found at www.alpenrosechallenge.com/track101.htm.

Registration takes place on Thursday, July 5, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at
Alpenrose. Two sessions of racing are scheduled for Friday, July 6,
beginning at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. On Saturday, July 7, two more sessions are
set, starting at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. On Sunday, July 8, the final two
sessions take place, starting at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

A host of national and local companies support the Alpenrose Challenge,
including Alpenrose Dairy, Bike Central, CycleOne, Bike Gallery, Mike
Colbach (bicycleattorney.com) , Russ Auto Group, Race Center NW, Outdoors
NW, and River City Bicycles.

The Alpenrose Challenge is coming up July 6-8. Each year we try to attract
the fastest track riders that we can get to make this race the best for the
spectators. Since track racing doesn't exactly pay big money each year I am
contacted by riders who are looking for local support to allow them to
attend. Just a small amount of money, $100 or so, will often make it so
that someone can make it to the race that otherwise could not. What I like
to do is put local individuals or businesses together with individual
riders.

This year I have been contacted by:

Josiah Ng - One of the fastest sprinters you will see. Malaysian National
team member, Olympic and World Championship competitor.

Colby Pearce - US Hour record holder, Olympic and Worlds competitor

Michael Creed - US Team member and Worlds competitor

Peter Fitzpatrick -Australian team member
- Trexlertown pro series 2006-2nd rider of
the year
      - 1st Madison of the America's
      - 1st UCI 10km scratch race
      - Last year's Alpenrose Challenge; 1st 10 mile, 1st
Miss & Out, 1st Madison
- 2005-3rd Australian Madison Championship

Laura McCaughey - Tasmanian Female Cyclist of the Christmas Carnivals 2006
and 2007, 4th in the Australian National Keirin Championships and also 4th
in the Sprints.

Richard Schenk (age 20) - 2005 Junior National Points Race Champion and
Madison Champion, 2007 Multi-time Collegiate National Medalist (Penn
State) - Excellent Points Race Rider and Madison Rider
Clay Murfet (age 18) - 2007, 6th Place Junior Australian National Scratch
Race Championships, 2nd Junior Somerville, Overall Junior Champion New
Jersey Crit Series, 1st Manyunk Wall Juniors (8th best in Senior Pro 1/2) -
Excellent Points and Madison Rider

If you would like to support or sponsor any of these racers please let me
know. If there are other track racers that you would like to see come to
Portland let me know and I will contact them.

The Alpenrose Challenge is coming up this weekend. We need 3 things to make
this event a success:

1) Come watch the racing and tell all your friends to come too. It is not
often that you will get to see this caliber of track racing. Entry is free.
There will be food and cycling clothing for sale. There will be live music
during the period between the morning and afternoon sessions. More info at
www.alpenrosechallenge.com.

2) Local track riders need to race. I know it will be harder then local
racing but we need local riders to have a good field. Cat 2 and 3 riders
should plan to compete the Qualifier race in Friday.

3) I need a few volunteers to help. We need people to hold for the timed
events, guard the track crossings, help set up and take down each day, etc.
Let me know if you are available. You do not need to be there the whole day
or even the whole session.

The Alpenrose Challenge is coming up July 7-9. This is the one event each
year at the velodrome that we try to put on a real show by getting riders
from all over for a high level of competition. In part I view this as a
way of paying back the Alpenrose Dairy for the support they provide for
local bike racing not only by providing one of the few velodromes in the
country but also by providing space for OBRA to park the truck and to store
our ever expanding collection of race equipment. I know that the owners of
the dairy are very excited to see an international level of competition and
lots of people in the stands.

Now, here is a part where I need your help. Track racers have even less
resources than other bike racers since teams rarely provide any support for
travel to track races. I have been contacted by several riders who are
interested in coming to our race but who will need some support to do that.
In the past it has worked very well for me to use this list to try to find
people that are willing to support individual athletes to come to Alpenrose.
Often just a small amount, $100 or so, can make it possible for a rider to
come.

Here are some riders:
These riders have contacted me and are possible competitors:
Becky Quinn - 2005 US Track champion (scratch race) and 2005 AVC omnimum
winner
Anne-Brit Ericksen - 2005 Canadian Champion in Keirin and 500 m; at
Alpenrose last year 2nd in 500 m, 3rd in Match Sprint (got shut out in the
Keirin, so has a vendetta!).
Tom Hanley - 2005 National Collegiate Sprint Champion, 4th Espoir and 5th
Espoir respectively in the Kilo and Pursuit 2005 Elite Track Natz
Pete Fitzpatrick - Elite Aussie

Riders I have not heard from but who we might convince:
Jenny Reed - Olympian and World Keirin Medalist
Michael Blatchford - New, young sprinter, World Cup, Pan-Am and Jr. Worlds
medalist
Jamie Staff - World medalist

Riders who have been here before but say they can't come (maybe we can
change their minds):
Josiah Ng - Malaysian sprinter
Erin Mirabella - Olympian and Jack Kelly Fair Play Award winner
Jeff Hopkins - Aussie all rounder

I am willing to try to contact any of these riders or anyone else you would
like to see. If you can put up just a bit of money maybe, after we pool it
together, we can convince them to come.

Candi, Mike and all that helped and raced;

Thanks for the great weekend of excitement, inspir-

ation and fun. I am always amazed at what the

human body can do when it is in shape and driving

by some serious motivation....

The racing was great. It's great to see some of the

new up coming cyclists and of course the more or

very mature ones too. Both inspire us to achieve

higher goals.

For me the high point is seeing that many tackies

in our infield. As usual I learned several new ole

Indian tricks for some of the mature ones and picked

up on the enthusiasm of the youthful ones.

I was also proud of the showing from out local

competitors. When you see them competing and even

beating some National trackies it shows me that any of

us can achieve whatever we set out to do.

Thanks to all, Hayden, Cap Velo

The Alpenrose Challenge is coming up quickly. As a memorial tribute to Carl

Cadonau I want to make this event go off as big as possible. Lots of fast

racers on the track and standing room crowds is the goal. Many of the

fastest bike track racers need support in order to come to this event since

sponsor support for track racing is a pretty rare item. I am looking for

people to sponsor riders for this event. Often just $100-200 will make the

difference to convince a rider to travel to the event. If you let me know

who you would like to see and how much you could give in support I will

contact that rider to let him know we want him here. You can identify any

specific rider that you want. If you have contact information to help me

that would be great but I can try to find them if you don't. Here are some

suggested names:

Colby Pearce - US Olympic Team member, US Hour record holder

Mike Beers - 2002 National Kilo Champion

Bobby Lea - 2003 National Kilo and Pursuit

Stephen Alfred - 2003 National Sprint Champion and multiple times Alpenrose

Challenge sprint and keirin winner

Mike Creed - new USPS rider, 20 times National Champion and web page writer

extraordinaire

All of the above riders have already contacted me so we know they are

interested and will likely show up with just a little encouragement. If you

need some other potential names let me know.

In the past a few people have been very generous with support this way. It

would be great if people could step up and help individual name riders make

it to the Alpenrose Challenge this year to make it the best one to date.

Let me know how you want to see here and how much you can put towards that.

Hey Mike, sign me up!

I'm willing to take all data processing responsibilities for

the AVC including registration, entry fees, start sheets, and

race results. Now that I've done most of these activities once,

I should be able to handle it okay.

I'd also like to see about getting the track timing system to log

times directly to a computer, but this may require some financial

investment. Is there money available for this?

Regards,

Cal Stone

Now that the Challenge is over, the athletes are headed back home and Candi

and I have had a chance to get some sleep we are starting to think about

next year. I would like to thank all the people that helped us with putting

on the race. It would clearly be impossible to do with out that help.

Thanks.

We do, however, need more help if this event is to continue. The race has

developed a national reputation and I think it is important that it stays on

the calendar. I think it could easily get bigger in terms of publicity and

spectator draw.   But Candi and I can't continue to put out the amount of

time and effort that we have in the past. The best option would be to piece

out all the components of putting on the race into manageable size pieces so

that no one gets overwhelmed. Much of this stuff has been done before and

it is just a matter of having someone spend more time paying attention to

it. If you are interested in helping out let us know.

The Alpenrose Challenge is coming up soon, the weekend after this coming

weekend. This is your chance to race against other track riders from around

the country and to compete in front of a spectator crowd or to come out and

watch. If you are planning on riding make sure that you are registered

before the evening session on 7/18 as space in the mass start events may be

limited. Let me know if you need any info or assistance.

This is Jeremy VanSchoonhoven. I will be doing a trials demo at the Alpenrose Challenge. If any one out there has never been to this event, it is a don't miss event. It has some of the best racing you will ever see. I get around to a lot of events each year and this one is the best, and when it comes to track racing it is the best. This year with all the big guns coming in, it should be even greater. Come out and cheer on the local greats as they challenge some of the best riders in the world. Go Oregon riders!!!

If you have kids, I will be trying to keep them busy doing demos and would be glad to talk to them about trials riding, road racing, cyclo-cross, or cross country mountain biking.

If you love racing come on out, I will see ya there!!!

My previous plea for cash to sponsor individual riders to come to the

Alpenrose Challenge has shaken out a bit of money. With this I have been

able to convince a couple of riders to come. A bit more sponsorship could

make a big difference. If anyone has frequent flier miles that they could

donate that could help a bunch too. There are still lots of riders on the

fence that I think we could knock off with just a small amount of support.

Pick the rider you would like to sponsor and I will contact them. Let me

know if you would like them to do a "meet & greet" or something for their

sponsorship.

We are also looking for people to provide host housing during the event,

either with or without transportation.

As just an example of how this is working, Jeff Labauve, the new US record

holder for the 200 m, was previously not going to be able to come. He has

now agreed to come, based on the individual sponsorship money and our

promise to provide him with host housing and transportation. Any one want

to host him?

A list of suggested riders is below. Pick from them or make your own

suggestion. I really thank the Oregon cycling community for all the support

you guys have shown.

Now that the Alpenrose Challenge and the Six Day are over and we have had

some time to decompress I would like to thank the people that were involved

with the organization of the race. Several people volunteered their time to

work with the organizing committee all last year. Lots of effort was put

towards promotion, housing, artwork, sponsorship development, etc. Many

people volunteered during the race doing less than fun jobs like parking lot

duty. Without the work done by these people it would be impossible to put

on such an event. Thank you for helping to make this one of the best races

in the US.

Now to think towards next year. We need people to help with planning and

organization of the 2001 event. The people involved with the Challenge this

year were stretched to the max. Some of last year's people are not going to

be involved for 2001. If you want to be in on the organizational end of the

biggest prize list track race in the US please get in touch with me.

It is also time to solicit donations for the track program. In 1997 I asked

that people commit to donating yearly for a 5 year period. This money is

used to offset the costs of the re-construction of the velodrome done that

year. I will be sending a note by snail mail to those of you that have

donated in the past. Obviously money is one of those thing that you can't

have too much of. Anyone who appreciates the facility that we have should

consider giving to this program.

Only 1 day left to see some really exciting racing at the

velodrome. Sunday from 10 am to about 6 will be the second day of the

Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge. We will have Kerins, Points Races, Sprints

and much much more, including a trials demonstration and we are giving away

a pair of ZIPP wheels with $1 raffel tickets.

We have just over 76 riders from around the world including Jamaica, South

Africa, Germany, Alberta, BC, and many of the states including, NY, PA, TX,

NC, Ca, Wa, GA, Ut, and Oregon.

today we put the largest number of riders on the track at one time and the

speeds kept everything single file for most of the 60 laps.

It has been exciting stuff and I hate to see any of you miss out.

Admission is free but we are collecting food for the Oregon Food Bank
