We had Ellie's cross bike stolen from her grade school (she commuted regularly), it was parked in view in front of the office. Someone cut her cable and took the bike.
When we filed the police report the officer was amazed that we had a record of the Serial Number, color, size, make, model etc. We have lost other bikes we did not have the serial numbers for. Having good accurate records of all of your bikes is important.
We have not yet recovered the bike and Ellie is having to take the bus to school.
