Good day fellow riders,
Christmas is over and the new year is upon us and so it is with great pleasure that Claire and I bring you the 2003 Elkhorn Classic Stage Race held again in Baker City, Oregon June 20th, 21st, and 22nd, 2003. This three day, four stage event was a "race not to miss" for the more than 300 participants that raced in the inaugural event in 2002. Snow, wind, and cows could not dampen the enthusiasm of the peleton for the courses that Baker City and the race in general had to offer. We have moved the race two weeks later in the year to improve our chances in the weather and the "Elkhorn Road Race" will be almost guaranteed to be free of snow. Do not miss this race for the following:
All races are an easy bike ride from anywhere in Baker City. Park your car and put the keys away for three days of riding.
Plenty of Hotel rooms with discounts being offered at almost any place in town with the host Hotel again being the Sunridge Best Western. Discounts Thursday through Saturday night. See web page for lodging choices.
The inexpensive option of $5.00/night at the Baker High School for camping or gym use. Proceeds benefit the High School Volleyball Team. Available Thursday through Saturday night.
Two epic loop road races. Stage one: The Oregon Trail Road Race 75 miles of beautiful country riding along the same route the Pioneers took over the Oregon Trail. In reverse direction from 2002.
Stage four: The Elkhorn Road Race An Oregon scenic byway 105 mile odyssey loop of alpine mountains, valleys, farms, ghost towns, and views.
Stage three: The Gold Rush Criterium A safe, fast, afternoon downtown criterium through the middle of historic Baker City. $1,000 in primes!
Stage two: The Wingville Individual Time Trial: A 10 mile test against the clock.
A 100% pay out event. In 2002 over $8,500 was paid out in cash. Curved glass etched trophies.
Test your skills and strengths against a true regional peleton. Last year riders came from Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Nevada, Colorado, California, Canada, and New Zealand.
Team discounted entry fees. Teams of four or more receive a discount of $10.00/rider. See web page for details.
Experience true small town hospitality. The citizens of Baker City are just excited to have the race as we are to host the event.
Registration is now open @ www.elkhornclassic.com We had a strong turn out in the 2002 event and had to close the 3/4 field early due to field size restrictions of 100 riders per category. Both the pro 1/2 field and the masters 40+ field were nearly full, and a deep talented women's field was also present. Do not wait until the last minute if you would like to participate in the 2003 event as you may be disappointed.
Please distribute this message to teams or clubs that may be interested in participating.
Thank you and have an excellent 2003,
Nathan and Claire Hobson
