Racing Wheel Recommendation for heavy rider.

David Feldman

2003-01-27

For some of my heavier customers the Velocity Deep V

has worked well with 36 spokes. It seems like,

regardless of the rim choice, the strongest spoking is

14/15/14 double butted spokes on the front and left

side rear, with straight 14 gauge on the right side

rear. The deep aero rims of any brand do stay

straighter under bigger people without having to

resort to 40 or more spokes--the only problem with

that many spokes is that hub varieties are few and

prices are usually way at the high end such as Hugi,

Phil Wood, and Chris King.

I have the same problems. I'm probably one of the

heaviest cat 3 out there (weighed in at the doctors at

285 last week (I'll drop to between 240-250 by April

(happens every year))). I have a lot of power in my

legs and between my weight and leg strength, I just

destroy wheels. I true then several days a week. I'm

most likely to pull them out of true when sprinting,

and I had a close call taking a hard corner on a

downhill stretch last season (busted spokes due to the

strain). Needless to say, I'm hunting as well. This

same question came up on VeloNews two months ago and

here's what Lennard Zinn had to say:

http://www.velonews.com/tech/report/articles/3249.0.html

--quote

Question:

I would like your recommendations for a new set of

wheels. I am a recreation rider (6 foot 3, 215 lbs.)

who rides about 60-100 miles per week (use to race 20

years ago and think about doing it again someday in

the distant future). I ride on city streets (San

Francisco) and frequently break spokes (about every

350 miles). My existing wheels are Campy record hubs,

Mavic open with 32 spoke rims. The wheels were rebuilt

about 14 months ago and lasted about 4 months without

breaking spokes.

Is there a wheel that can carry my weight, and city

bumps but is light and good looking? I like the looks

and idea of the Campy, Spinergy, and Velomax Orion

types of wheels. Any advice? --Gordon

Answer:

I have had great success personally as well as with my

big customers on Mavic Ksyrium SSC SLs (most of my

custom-frame customers are over 6'5" and 200 pounds).

--Lennard "

--unquote

I'm thinking about trying these out when I have the

bucks. They run around $600-700 for the pair.

Jerry is exactly correct. Although I must admit, radial "laced" spokes do

look cool.

The best builders, when asked for a dished rear that has better

lateral stability will build a three cross on the drive side and a

one or two cross on the left side... and sometimes with a lighter

spoke on that side.

Eric, while your premise is true, the experience is that that

particular configuration is very subject to spokes "working" under

load... the result is that spokes loosen quickly and

catastrophically... and they might have a higher than usual rate of

spoke failure at the hub end (although that part is anacdotal and I

can't confirm it).

The best builders, when asked for a dished rear that has better

lateral stability will build a three cross on the drive side and a

one or two cross on the left side... and sometimes with a lighter

I agree with Erik's suggestion below, I have you both beat on weight, and since converting to radial on the non-drive side of standard wheels, I have not broken any spokes either.

Thanks for all the information and recommendations. I'm at 210 right now,

should drop to 200 by April. I plan to use them for road races, crits or

PIR type races. I got a pair of rolf comps with my bike and they went out

of true. I loosened all the spokes and had a local shop redo them and that

made a huge difference. Much tighter and they felt stronger. Problem is,

I've got a ton of miles on them. My day to day wheels are Mavic Open Pro

with 32 steel spokes. I bought them pre built and they also went out of

true. I did the same thing with them, loosened all the spokes and had a pro

tighten and true and they have been solid since.

I will gather the information and see what looks good and have it hand built

from the start.

BTW I did find a new set of wheels from Zipp. They are built the same way,

but with extra spokes and they label them "404 Clydesdale Clincher". They

cost a lot, though.

Thanks again,

Pat,

My weight varies from about 190 to 200 and I've always had troubles with

wheels.

They just seemed to fall apart on me. I found riding a 36 spoke wheel, 4

cross made an

indestructible wheel.

Then I got sick of riding those and started building my own. I have had

very good

luck with Velocity Deep V and arrowhead and Richey OCR rims. I can ride a

32 spoke wheel, even in cyclocross, and it will live to spin another day.

For non

OCR rims, I always use a radial spoke pattern on the non drive side of the

rear

wheel, and I haven't broke a single spoke using it. In Tucson, I hit a

railroad track

while going about 30 and even though it dented my rim beyond repair, the

spokes

did not break and I was able to ride home.

So I'd say don't buy a stock wheel, get something built by a good builder

who

can get that spoke tension up where it should be. Or get Jobst Brant's book

and do it yourself if you have the time, patience, and mechanical aptitude.

-Erik

I'm a large rider, over 200lbs. I'm afraid to spend $600+ on a set of

wheels that can't support me. Most wheel descriptions leave out recommended

maximum body weight. Any good recommendations from the experts?

Thanks
