Pat,

My weight varies from about 190 to 200 and I've always had troubles with

wheels.

They just seemed to fall apart on me. I found riding a 36 spoke wheel, 4

cross made an

indestructible wheel.

Then I got sick of riding those and started building my own. I have had

very good

luck with Velocity Deep V and arrowhead and Richey OCR rims. I can ride a

32 spoke wheel, even in cyclocross, and it will live to spin another day.

For non

OCR rims, I always use a radial spoke pattern on the non drive side of the

rear

wheel, and I haven't broke a single spoke using it. In Tucson, I hit a

railroad track

while going about 30 and even though it dented my rim beyond repair, the

spokes

did not break and I was able to ride home.

So I'd say don't buy a stock wheel, get something built by a good builder

who

can get that spoke tension up where it should be. Or get Jobst Brant's book

and do it yourself if you have the time, patience, and mechanical aptitude.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Racing Wheel Recommendation for heavy rider.

I?m a large rider, over 200lbs. I?m afraid to spend $600+ on a set of

wheels that can?t support me. Most wheel descriptions leave out recommended

maximum body weight. Any good recommendations from the experts?

Thanks
