Here is my distorted perspective:

Think of these angry people as wild animals. They are psychologically

incapable of socialized human rational thoughts. Even if the law

enforcement and judical agencies were to apply legal consequences for

their actions, they would not understand the relationship between their

behavoir and the pain. All they would remember is that someone else

caused them pain. At best, we can hope that some of them would weakly

connect their behavoir with the painful consequences. This might

prevent them from repeating the behavoir in the future. In the worst

case, they become even angrier and attack again. We have a lot of

people (wild animals) in our society that can not make that connection

(re. repeat offenders).

Apply this analogy to event. If you were out hiking or mtbing and a

bear or cougar came on to you, would you immediately find a stick and

aggresively provoke them (middle finger response). I have had

encounters with both animals. I stayed cool and removed myself from the

situation. I was exhilirated that I survived the encounter. I wasn't

pissed off at the animal. If those animals were in my neighborhood and

could be identified (license plates), then I would call the appropriate

regulatory agency to have them removed (dead or alive).

I don't want there to be any confusion about my political nature. I

would not be opposed to the permanent removal of some the wild animals

on the road. Man is not an endangered species just a protected species

so you have to be careful about the extraction. Can you envision the

picture of the roadie holding up a bagged trophy road rager posted at

your local bike shop?

Be cool. Call it in if you have enough useful information. Don't poke

the hornet's nest with your middle finger. If it comes to blows, leave

your helmet on. People die from punches to the head and there are many

other possible long term consequences.
